Job Summary:
As a Commis 1, you will assist in the preparation, cooking, and presentation of food in line with the standards and recipes set by senior kitchen staff. You will gain practical experience in various kitchen sections and work alongside other culinary professionals to ensure the smooth running of the kitchen.
Key Responsibilities:
- Food Preparation:
- Prepare and cook food according to the recipes and menu requirements.
- Assist in the preparation of mise en place, which includes chopping, dicing, and portioning ingredients.
- Ensure that all ingredients are prepped and stored correctly for use during service.
- Cooking Assistance:
- Work in different kitchen sections such as sauces, pastry, grill, or prep, rotating to gain experience.
- Help senior chefs with cooking tasks, especially during busy periods.
- Ensure consistency in food quality and presentation.
- Kitchen Hygiene & Safety:
- Maintain cleanliness of your work area and ensure that hygiene standards are met at all times.
- Follow proper safety and sanitation procedures, including the proper handling of kitchen equipment.
- Ensure all tools and kitchen equipment are cleaned and stored properly.
- Supporting Senior Chefs:
- Assist in the training and development of junior kitchen staff.
- Take direction from Chef de Partie, Sous Chef, and other senior kitchen staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned by senior kitchen staff.
- Stock Management:
- Assist in the receiving and storing of deliveries, ensuring that food is stored at the correct temperature.
- Report any discrepancies or stock shortages to the appropriate senior chef.
- Menu and Recipe Development:
- Assist with creating daily specials and ensuring their presentation and preparation meet standards.
- Familiarize yourself with seasonal ingredients and potential menu changes.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Culinary diploma or equivalent qualification preferred but not always required.
- Previous kitchen experience or a solid foundation in food preparation is an advantage.
- Basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
- A passion for cooking and learning new culinary techniques.
- Ability to handle pressure during busy service times.
